The Ethics for the EHS Professional course covers how professional codes of ethics can be used in identifying, analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas encountered by Environmental and OH&S Professionals.

Course Objectives

This course has the following learning objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how the various Codes of Ethics apply to EHS practice
  • Learn how professional Codes of Ethics requirements relate to ethical decision-making
  • Explore how to utilize various commonly-accepted approaches for resolving ethical issues
  • Practice using ethical principles to assess case study scenarios using the various resolution approaches discussed in the course materials
  • Learn what steps can be taken to avoid future ethical dilemmas

NOTE – This course focuses on resolving ethical issues likely to be encountered by individual EHS professionals rather than on how organizations should act in order to be considered ethical.

It has been designed to meet the 2-hour ethics training requirement established for CIHs by BGC (formally ABIH) (click here to go to the BGC website to learn more about this requirement).

Course Structure and Content

This is an on-demand web-based course set up in a members-only virtual classroom. The course uses audio lessons, downloadable handouts, case studies and an on-line quiz.

There are 6 Course Lessons:

  • Lesson 1 – Understanding Professional Codes of Ethics
  • Lesson 2 – Common Approaches to Resolving Ethical Issues
  • Lesson 3 – Ethical Principles Related to  Competency
  • Lesson 4 – Ethical Principles Related to Truthfulness & Confidentiality
  • Lesson 5 – Ethical Principles Related to  Independence & Conflict of Interest
  • Lesson 6 – Ethical Principles Related to Loyalty & Public Protection

The course also provides an opportunity to assess one or more case studies that set out ethical dilemmas similar to those that have been encountered by other EHS professionals.

Course Instructor

Thea Dunmire is the course instructor.  She is an attorney, certified industrial hygienist and certified safety professional.  She has been active in AIHA for over 25 years and is an AIHA Fellow.  She was a member of the original Code of Ethics Taskforce (1993-1994) and is currently a member of the AIHA Joint IH Ethical Education Committee (JIHEEC).  For more information about how she came to teach this course, click here.

Course Completion

In order to obtain a certification of completion, students will have to –

  1. listen to the course lessons
  2. complete the course quiz
  3. complete an on-line written assessment of at least one of the course case studies

Once you submit an on-line verification form, the instructor will confirm your completion of the course lessons, quiz results and a case study assessment. If you have met the course requirements, a course certificate will be e-mailed to you within 3 business days.
